New Delaware Indoor Kart Track opens

Cotty Edgens, his wife Joyce and two sons Scotty and Tim plan to open Shore Speed, an indoor go kart race track, by the end of July in Milford. Located at 971 East Masten Circle, the former location of First State Manufacturing behind McDonalds,the new facility hosts a quarter mile track made for racing up to 8 electric go karts at once. Edgens hopes to create a destination for race fans and their families inside the 40,000 square foot building as the business will offer individual and private races year round.

An avid race fan and driver himself, Cotty is Track Champion at Lakeland Raceway and Auburndale Speedway in Central Florida where he drove ministocks for several years. After visiting Myrtle Beach with his family fourteen years ago, he saw a go kart track in full operation and thought about the possibilities of opening a similar business in Delaware. Ten years later Cotty purchased four electric go karts from a gentleman in Ohio as he continued to look for a venue large enough to accommodate an indoor track. As he stepped foot inside the industrial building on Masten Circle in Milford months ago, Cotty knew he would finally have the chance to open the business he had envisioned for years.

“This is my dream and I have been doing this for fourteen years,” commented Cotty. “I want this to be a full family experience when we open.”

Living in Millsboro, Cotty decided on Milford as the future location for Shore Speed because of its central location. “Milford is central to Rehoboth, Seaford, Dover and puts us in a great location,” commented Cotty. “In the summer many people from Delaware are looking for something fun for the family where they do not have to sit in beach traffic.”

In addition to the indoor track, the facility will host a rock climbing wall, inflatable bounces, remote control car track and an arcade for younger children to enjoy. Shore Speed will offer race times open to the public as well as private parties where individuals, businesses or organizations can reserve the facility for themselves.

“We want to have a wide variety of people here,” commented Cotty. “We want to see the younger as well as the older kids here enjoying themselves.”
With an inventory of 16 single seater and 6 two seater go karts in the pit, 8 go karts will be allowed to race each other on the track at one time. Edgens states that individuals must be sixteen to drive the go karts by themselves and will be required to wear a helmet and review safety guidelines. Racers’ track times and tournament winners will be displayed in real time on their website and Facebook page.

Before opening their doors to the public, Shore Speed, LLC must first acquire approval from their conditional use request to the City of Milford. The request to use the industrial-zoned building as a recreational facility will first be heard by City of Milford Planning and Zoning on Tuesday, June 18 where that committee will make a recommendation to Milford City Council for final approval.
