Unser Racing Denver, CO League Recap
Racing NewsRound 1 Recap

The New Year League at Unser kicked off on Wednesday the 11th with 22 drivers in the field. A lot of new faces showed up to try and win a chance to test a 30 hp Rotax kart with the Unser Racing Performance division. The qualifying had changed a little from the last league.

The new qualifying style was win by position instead of fast time, with the drivers
being added to their qualifiers randomly. Tom G would secure a spot in the A main with his 2nd place finish in the 4th qualifier. With tight racing in all 4 qualifiers, the A, B, C mains were set to go.

The 6 kart C main would start with; Mark A pole position and John P in 2nd grid position. Mark A. and John P. passed each other twice on the first lap but Mark A. would cross the start line 1st after lap 1. When John P. tried to pass back into
the lead he was black-flagged for his contact during the pass attempt. A rookie to kart racing, Thomas G would chase the fast guys as long as he could until finally being lapped. Thomas G showed great sportsmanship with not holding up the
leaders as he was lapped. He let them by then tucked in behind them to try and learn their lines. After Mark A put him and the number 31 kart up front early with a clear track he was able to lead ever lap of the C main. Mark showed great speed
while clamming the first win of the 2012 New Year League. John M, racer name “I wanna go fast” showed just that with a solid 2nd place finish and a transfer into the B main.

With the field very close in times and speed for the B main, whomever could make it around the first couple laps clean would have a good chance at moving onto the A main. With only half a lap complete we had our first accident involving 4 karts. This set Derek B back to last. He showed great heart and with a no quit attitude mounted a hard charge in the next 24 laps. He crossed the line in 4th,place, only 2 spots outside of a transfer position. Derek was awarded passing champ for
this charge. Jon R was trying to find away around Scott R for the lead all race long. Scott’s smooth style made it hard for Jon R to make the pass. Jon R showed his racing experience with a clean pass on lap 24 of 25 and moved onto the A main
event. Even though Scott R let 1st slip out of his grasp, he held down the final transfer as driver 10 into the A main.

Chase T drew a 2 invert putting him in position 2 and leaving Brian C with pole. Brian is no stranger to pole position, he had won pole with the fastest qualifying time in the winter league. Not being able to capitalize on that pole position, Brian was really looking for a win tonight. Chase T and Tripp G had other plans and passed Brian C on the first lap sending him back to 3rd. With 5 laps in the books Tripp G wasn’t driving like it was his first league race, he put a 1 second gap between him and 2nd.

Brian C had the best line coming across the finish line and used this to close the gap back on Chase T in 2nd. Brian C made the pass in the same section on lap 7. With blue flags waving Tripp would run into lappers on lap 10, this gave Brian C the chance to close that gap that Tripp worked so hard for. Bob S in 4th took advantage of the lappers a few laps later as Chase T struggled to make his way through them.

We now had a battle for 1st and 2nd as well as 3rd and 4th with 10 laps left anything could happen. Brian C would use his better line across the finish to attempt the
pass for the lead. He tried to make the pass countless times but always found himself on the out side on the 1st 180 and unable to make the pass stick. With the laps winding down, Tripp started driving a defensive line which would make a
clean pass that much harder for Brain. This driving strategy would work out in his favor as the checkered flag came out Tripp would be the first winner of the 2012 leagues. Brian would cross in 2nd only .03 seconds behind. Chase would hold
off Bob S for 3rd. Andrew B would round out the top 5.

With last lap passes, winners who lead every lap, and a few crashes the stage has been set. This will be a great 5 race series with no clear prediction as to the outcome at this point.
